loran set coupler question

are some of the small boat loran sets made to work without having a coupler unit? I see a lot of 'em for sale without couplers, but had always thought they require a coupler to work right.

I do recall one time, though, when one of mine had a coil of coax laying in the bottom of the center console, unconnected to anything, and it worked. Some yahoo hadn't bothered to reattach it to the gunwale antenna after working on it.

So whats' the word on couplers?

As far as I know they all need couplers but maybe some people have removed the units without realizing there is a coupler that the antenna is screwed into?

Well, that's exactly what makes me shy away from those without a separate coupler. If I knew that there are some out there made to work without couplers, then I'd be more comfortable.

Thanks

pardon my intrusion, but why would you be in the market for loran at this time?
