I have a 1993 Johnson 115 Model TJ115TLETS that I bought new and has few hours on it. I started experiencing a problem where it would run OK for a while then lose power when I went to throttle up. Starts and idles good. Used Clymer manual and checked fuel system, stator, pwr pk, coils, spark @1/2" all seem good. Noticed "clean" plug in #4 and evidence of water in cylinder. Any suggestions on what to look for and how easy is this to fix?

first do a compression check, hopefully it's just a gasket.

forgot to mention I checked compression. That cylinder is the lowest Port side 117/100
Starboard side 120/120, rounding off
My Siberian's name is Takoda (means friend-to-all in Lakota language)

Thanks Tashasdaddy
Just for grins I pulled the head on that side and found the cylinder full of white milky water/gas/oil.
the head gasket has "holes" in it near the edge of the #4 cylinder wall. The water jacket has lots of calcium build up too. If I replace the head gasket on that side is it wise to replace the other one also or leave as is due to the compression test being good?

To follow up: The best I can tell is that the whole problem is a Port side head gasket. I ordered a complete set of head and cover gasket.. Should both head gaskets be changed at the same time or is Starboard side OK if the compression results are good and have had no other problems on that side?

i would do both sides while you are at it. this way you can check the other side. you've already bouhgt the gaskets. if you are like me and leave them laying around they will be ruined, when you need it.

Re: loses power at high speeds

May be a dumb question but the repair manual recommends to put OMC gasket sealing compound on the head gaskets. Can't get OMC around here but Permatex 1 & 2 are available. What should I use since I'm new at this head gasket thing? I do have torque wrenches available in both inch/pounds and foot/pounds. Thanks for your advice, Tashasdaddy.

Did you see any scoring on that cylinder wall from lackof lubrication? Also, I would clean out that calcium buildup while your at it and replace the delfectors in the cooling passages, if there is any.

There was no evidence of scoring in that cylinder and, yes, I have cleaned out the calcium.
