I've seena couple references to this in talks about rotted transoms on I/Os. I don't get it. how will a rotten transom affect your coupling?

If the transom flexes, the transom housing and gimble housing move, and this misaligns the engine to the gimble bearing, resulting in a blown bearing and/or u-joints and coupler.

Ok, we must be talking about different types of drives here.
My I/O passes right through the transom. None of the engine or outdrive are attached to the transom at all. The only part that does touch is the rubber boot that keeps air in the boat and water on the outside.
I take it that there are some drives where the outdrive is attached to the outside of the transom?

You have an earlier OMC outdrive, commonly referred to a stringer mount system. The engine and intermediate housing, that contains the drive shaft and coupler, are ridgidly attached.

They all are talking about transom mount drives ie Mercruiser, Volvo, OMC Cobra.
