Losing da Bottom

Thought I would post a question here and continue trying to figure out why (actually I think I know the why...) and come up with a solution to allow my FF to continue reading the bottom (depth) while my boat is on plane.

I have a two month old 2005 PT175 with 75hp Merc. Everything works wonderful but I get nervous planing on unfamiliar water without knowing where the bottom is... I have lowered the stock Lowrance x-37ex transducer bracket as far as it will go.

When I eyeball the line from the transducer to the bottom of the hull (this PT175 has a stepped hull) it apears to me the transducer loses clean water while the boat is on plane. At this point all I can think of doing is dropping the transducer down lower using some homemade McGyver brackets.

Would really appreciate and thoughts and suggestions on this issue and how I might regain contact with da bottom.

Thanks in advance for your time and sharing your experiences with this new boater.

tight Lines,
Bill

Re: Losing da Bottom

stepped hulls are bad for transom mount...my opinion:should have been epoxied to shoot thru hull if at all possible. the direction with my ducer said not to mount on stepped hull, but if you must mount it on the step itself...check this link
http://www.humminbird.com/images/PDF/Matrix47_install.pdf
hope this helps

You do not want to set it to low or you will loose it the first time you pass of trash. Center it in the middle of the steps a good foot away from the motor. Make sure the transducer is parallel to the bottom of the boat.

Re: Losing da Bottom

LTC Birkett,
I had an '03 PT 175, same problem. When up on plane, the transducer is out of the water, has to be submerged to work! I plugged the existing 'ducer mounting holes and lowered the transducer to the first step.(same vertical area as the drain and livewell inlet/outlet).
Mount it so it runs in clean, non turbulent water, between strakes, ribs, etc. I mount my transducer so its face is at least 1/2" below the hull. When mounting, don't forget to consider the position of your trailer bunks.
