new problem, on my 1961 18 hp johnson. for some reason, it will spark for a few pulls, and then it quits sparking. i took the flywheel of and looked around and everything looked fine, put the flywheel back and and got some spark for a few more pulls, and then lost it again. it seems like if i take the flywheel off and put it back on it gives me spark, but it keeps losing it. oh yeh, i just replaced the coils, points, and condensers. it was working fine yesterday. but the spark just keeps going in and out. have any ideas?

Re: losing spark

Flywheel key and/or keyway all beat up, loose and sloppy? The flywheel magnets have to be in the proper relationship with the points. A loose keyway can put it off a quarter inch or more.

Re: losing spark

the key just pulls out and you put a new one in. I has to be the proper key though. A hardware store key will just shear. Get one at your local dealer
