loss of power on 454 mercruiser

The marina recently replace my control box. Up unitl that was done last week I had no problem with the operation of the boat. Afterwards it seems like I have no powere to get up over the hump on plane. Also the the cables were replaced.<br /><br />My Marina tells me I now need a carburetor? Does tis make sense?

The problem was the shifter handle had stripped it's threads. So I had no throttle control. I actually took the boat out with vice grips and it ran fine.

sounds like carb is not fully opening and cable may need to be adjusted,thats where I would be looking.
