I have a 1993 40HP Evinrude attached to an 18 foot pontoon boat. The engine idles fine and under load. I can get up to about 3400 RPM. After that the poser dies on the engine and as a result speed drops off. If I back off the throttle it runs fine untill I try and push it past 3400 again. I have performed the linkage and sync adjustments in the manual and it now runs better than when I first got it, about a week ago, except for this power loss problem. Any suggestions before I start looking at power packs?

Re: Loss of Power

I haven't worked on Evinrudes for quite some time, but your problem sounds like what used to happen if you get a little piece of junk in the carburator. It only takes a fleck of paint, sand, etc. and it will cause the problem you describe. Try draining the carbs and see if there is any sediment in them. Good luck!
