loss power

I have a 20hp Johnson outboard. It lost 90% of the thrust while pulling under strain.What do I look for.?

Checking for adequate fuel, air, and spark, would be a good place to start.

If you lost spark on one cylinder, or head gasket failed and leaks water into one cylinder, it'd sure seem like you lost most power, even if it seems to idle well. Check compression and spark. Don't worry about buying a compression tester, just pull the plugs and put your finger over each hole one at a time and pull the cord. You'll know instantly if it's the head gasket, because one of 'em won't try to pull your finger in, or blow it off the plug hole. Good luck!
