Hi guy's

I have an old 60 hp v4 Johnson, I thing it about a 1966. I?ll get the model number when I get home from work.

I took it out yesterday to do some wake boarding and tubing, it started to run ruff when accelerating (after bout 2 hour of use), so checked and changed the plug, they were a bit oil.(probable due to the fact that we were idling allot as we hadn't done wake boarding before) that fixed that problem. The motor was running good. After lunch we stared again motor was going sweet. We were managing to get up on the board and cruise around on half throttle for about an 1 to 1.5 hour, then all the sudden when we tried to pull the wake board up it didn't pull as hard, manage to get him up, at this point it sounded the revs start spike done bout 3-4 time's. After that it would rev out properly. We checked the temp by hold a hand on the head. You could hold it for about 30sec comfortable.

Took it home ran it up it the bucket pull 1 lead of at a time. The right bank didn't seem to make a difference (standing from the back looking at the motor). Changed the plugs again, still had the problem. Has spark and could see fuel on the plugs when pulled the out. Engine will rev fine under NO load. But in gear won't rev out!!!

This actual the second time it done some thing like this. The first time it would rev out to begin with, we stoped a fishes for while. When we left to go home it went fine. Assumed it was just fouled plugs

Sorry bout the long post

Any ideas what I could be, or any other post that people have come across would be a great help.

Re: not runnig on 2 cylinders

Sounds like you have a spark problem.
spark test each cyl with a spark tester to start with should jump 3/4 inch gap preset by most spark testers. if all ok then test compression on all cylinders. have you got a manual? if no spark then you need to diagnose the spark issue. once again you will need a manual. hope this helps..

Re: not runnig on 2 cylinders

Thanks guy for your help.

In the end i changed the wiring loom, pulled apart and cleaned the carby, changed the rotor button, complete new water pump , but could not get a hold of the spark plug gap tester.

Took the boat for tonight still had the same problem. with a flat screwdriver and a Stanley knife. (the only tool i had on me) played with the point gap.

End result was that the gap was to big.

So if any one no the point gap it would be very helpful.

Does 20 thou sound right

Thanks again.

Re: lost 2 cylinders on 1967 v4 johnson

I changed the title of the post to try and make it easier for anyone who searches for this or a similar problem.

One more question, can any one explain why there are two sets of points. And is it one set of point for each bank.

Thanks
