The following story is about Robert. We weren't freinds or even close acquaintances, we showed up at many of the same calls though. Even though we weren't buddies this is really starting to get to me. On one hand it is really one of the greatest ways a person could ever go. My generation will always view him as a hero, somebody to really look up too and admire, he gave it everything he had. On the other it really sucks that he had to go, he had so much more to offer. Rest in peace Robert.

On
Saturday, July 5, Teague, Texas Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert
Knight, 42, was injured while fighting a building fire in downtown Teague
when a wall collapsed on him. He was taken to a Tyler hospital, where
he died later that night in surgery.

Knight, who lived most of his life in Teague, was a 1988 Texas A&M graduate
who worked as an engineer for the BNSF Railroad. He joined the Teague VFD
in 1989 and became chief in 1999. He also volunteered as a paramedic.

In April, the Teague Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year.

Visitation is Tuesday at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Funeral services
are at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Teague. Burial
will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Knight is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.

More often than not, we miss these stories, as they're never told, or get buried in the news, or never get told. Far more important stuff going on in this world, dont you know...
As a brother of a Firefighter, we (my family) think about these losses as somewhat personal, although its not our right to do so.
Thanks for sharing your loss, Kenneth. I'll pass your story on to House 222, in Toronto Canada. (Cap'n Tom). God Bless the family of Chief Knight.

Only the best of us go to war, volunteer as firefighters or wear a badge of an officer of the law.

They go in harms way, on purpose, on our behalf, and we lose some.

I am grateful to all of them/you.

Thanks for sharing this. It is a sobering reminder to say "thank you" to the living while they can enjoy it.

More on this-

The United States Flag of Honor that has traveled around the
nation since 2001 in honor of fallen heroes arrives on
July 9, 2008 for a ceremony to honor Fire Chief Robert Knight of
the Teague Volunteer Fire Department. A donated private jet will
escort the United States Flag of Honor. The flag will travel
alongside the pilot in the cockpit. The Euless Fire Department's
Honor Guard will receive the flag that is personally handed off
by the airplane's captain.

The Honor Network takes great honor to memorialize all of those
heroes that give the ultimate sacrifice fighting for their country
and communities. "It truly touches the deepest emotions when a
volunteer, one who does not ask for pay, one who does it for the
love, is killed in the line of duty. Volunteers 'donate' time from
their personal lives to serve their community and country. This
type of unselfish and courageous service to a community is what
makes this country great," said Chris Heisler, President and CEO
of TheHonorNetwork.org.

58 Firefighters in the United States have made the ultimate
sacrifice so far in 2008. This is the second Firefighter loss
this year in Texas.

Re: Lost a good one doing what he loved.

Thank you for sharing this story. My thoughts and prayers are with Chief Knight's family.

Fallen
Rest now my fallen brother
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you?ve done your part
You?ve answered your last call
Rest knowing that in god we sought
Oh lord, watch over another who just fell
Rest assured your troubled thought
As we ring the final bell.
