While fishing about 1/2 mile off-shore at St. Marks Lighthouse, Florida, I lost my favorite fishing rod/reel.<br /><br />The last remaining rod of my grandfather's is now swimming in the gulf of Mexico attached to something large.<br /><br />My 7 year old daughter, hooked a shark (24") and was struggling to keep the rod tip up. I set mine down to help her (she landed the shark on her own) and not 5 seconds later the unattended rod/reel jumps up in the air and races through the water at incredible speed.<br /><br />I don't know what upsets me the most. Losing my grandfather's fishing rod or not knowing what was the other end of the line.<br /><br />After a few minutes, I was laughing about it (since there is nothing I can do about it anyhow).<br /><br />I forgot to take a picture of the big shark, but here are a few other pictures of the day: web page <br /><br /> :D

The good news is that you have a funny story and a great memory to go with grandpas rod and reel!

That is always a sad sight watching the rod go over the side of the boat. I'm sorry you lost that bit of grandpas legacy. :(

Every time I fished with that rod, I remembered the fact that my grandpa once did the very same with that rod. I take great deals of pride in sentimental items like that.<br /><br />My dad said that my grandpa would have preferred me lose it fishing than to let it collect dust in my shed.<br /><br />I'm going to get another rod/reel and get a couple more well-placed rod-holders for my boat.

While salmon fishing on the St. Joseph river in the 70's, I watched a rod/reel get pulled out of rod holder on a passing boat. They announced it to everyone in the area. About 20 minutes later another boat announced that they snagged a line with a rod/reel attached. They were willing to return the rod/reel but not the fish at the other end. Fair trade!

Re: Lost a Rod/Reel

My daughter and I were fishing for chinook on the Columbia one afternoon, and after an hour of fishing, the tip of her rod almost hit the water. I pulled the rod out of the rod holder (she had a broken arm) and I couldn't budge what ever had taken the lure. It went upriver and back, but it never broke water. Finally after about twenty minutes it broke the rod at the reel. I saved the reel and butt of the rod (it had belonged to her Grandfather). I'm pretty sure it was an oversized sturgeon. The one that got away (with a lure and half a rod).

We've lost several rigs in the Ohio River. I always tell them....don't lay the rod down with out pinning it. But granddad don't know nothin' and the next thing ya' know....syonora rod and reel. Now when we go out....it's cheap rigs. They drown worms just as good as the expensive ones and don't cost near as much when one goes overboard.

Re: Lost a Rod/Reel

I have found 3 rod/reels combos in the Ohio River over the past thirty years and only lost one, so I am still ahead. I caught a 2lb carp once near Rising Sun Indiana in the Ohio that still had a hook and string in its mouth. I pulled the string and after several minutes of tugging up popped an Zebco 909 (the old metal ones) and a Zebco rod. Used it for years and years. I have also found tackle boxes and a bag of marijuana wrapped around a pipe. No telling what you can find there.

Re: Lost a Rod/Reel

While surf fishing in Matagorda I jammed the handle of my brand new Penn rig into the sand (I was young and dumb) and proceded to slow roll a lure with another rig, looking back at my surf rod occasionally. I looked back... it was gone! I was very upset, but what could I do... after a few bad words and some stomping around, I kept fishing. 30 mins later while slow rolling the bottom I snagged it and pulled it back in. Still have the rig some 30 years later. And learned a good lessen.

Been there. Lost one in Ontario almost the same way. I had the front of my foot on it, something yanked it out from under my foot. the last we saw of it was it flying through the air almost parallel to the waters surface.

My grandfather lost a rod in Canada one year. The next year he snagged a line and pulled up the rod he had lost the previous year.
