Had the boat out today,1988,has 5.7 with Alpha 1 . was at wot doing about 42 mph and 4500 rpms. when all of a sudden it jumped to 6000 rpms and stoped all forward motion. So i shut it down immediately. opened the engine compartment and i could tell the engine was hot. (it was not over heating while i was moving) was at about 160* but was getting hot. i guess because the impeller was not turning. at this point i noticed i was taking on water in the engine compartment. it was coming out of a hole in the gimble plate just to the right side of where the water hose from outdrive comes thru.
I checked the outdrive prop and it spun freely in Neu. i put it in forward and would spin one way but not the other. put in reverse and it spun one way but not the other, As it should. But when i started the engine and put it in forward NOTHING. no gears and was heating up fast.
So it seems i have no drive from the engine to ????? where ever.
Anyone have any Ideas before i start dismateling things

I guess the U joint could have broke. Looks like you're taking the drive off.
Could be the shift cable not working right...

Did you hit some large waves when it let loose?

Really cant remeber about the waves, I kinda thought the same thing but the bad news is its a new outdrive only about 12-14 hours on it.

Sounds like you lost the coupler. When the engine gets out of alignment, or the splined shaft doesn't get lubed regularly, the coupler fails.

Look at the back of the engine where the shaft from the drive goes into the coupler. Is there any metal shavings?

Re: "Lost all propulsion"

Just went out to check on the metal shavings and i did not see any. I took a pair of chanel locks and tried to turn or wiggle the drive shaft and it did or would not move. i did check if shaft was turning during the breif time i had it running in the water and i did see thet it was turning.
Im stumped at this point.
