Hey, Ok so I was out yesterday just cruising around in my 1985 sea ray monaco. Had been out for about an hour when bugh buh buh buhg. then the temp hit the roof and it would not go into gear. it will start and get hot but wont go into gear. first thought was a water pump, then i thought, why would it not go into gear? so I thinking maybe i broke a cable or something. but after thinking a little longer about how these things work. Which i dont know that much at all really, I have come to the conclusion that it must be the lower unit. Is that a good assumption? thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Lost lower unit?

Sorry this doesn't help your problem, but I saw the title and read your description expecting to find out that whilst you where going along, the bottom of your drive dropped off into the lake!! I was quite dissapointed when I got to the end and found you still had a complete drive.. :)

I do not know anything about the stinger drives, so hopefully someone can help you out. It could be something as simple as a shift cable breaking, but could also be the lower drive.. I think you will have answer a few more questions before anyone can diagnose the problem.

Good luck..

Well, sorry to disappoint. I can imagine how that might be funny to someone other than the boat owner. Luckily if that were to happen to me I am a scuba diver and usually have my stuff near by. :D Which If I had lost it I would know that I just need to replace the lower unit.

My guess is the short 4-6" shaft that connects the waterpump to the upper gear case let go. This is a wear item that can strip and cause your symptoms.

Is that a difficult item to replace? I am somewhat proficient with car engines. never work on a tranny b4. I am guessing with the gears it might be more like a tranny job.
