I just pulled the boat out for the summer, and seem to have mis-placed the only key i had. I have a 1986 60Hp outboard merc, and it is controlled by a Quicksilver throttle, ignition assembly. the key tumbler has the number 305 2C on it and my local marinas cannot help me get a key for this. Any help would be awsome! Next option is to have a locksmith make a key, thats gonna cost 100-150 bucks. next time i will get a dozen keys made so this will never happen again!!

What? They just can't be bothered. Remember that before you deal with them in the future.

There were/are only a couple dozen keys for the Mercs. Any outboard repair shop or respectable marina will have a good assortment at hand.

I found keys for my 1971 Merc last summer without much trouble. Local marina's had BOXES of old keys that I sifted through and found what I needed. Bought 4 keys for $10.

The dealer simply did want to be bothered or didn't know his backside from a helm. You have the code. They can order a key if they don't have them in stock. Then buy a couple spares. They are dirt cheap compared to other boating stuff.

Re: Lost my key, need help!

After buying a new tumbler assembly and installing it, I now have a burnt out rectifier. Maybe i went wrong with a wire. Funny thing is the marina told me my control unit was after-market, I looked it up in the Seloc manual and they display the exact unit i have. So now i have a mis-matched, jimmy rigged control unit due to a lazy technition at Springmount marine and auto, who couldnt be bother to pull out a 5 dollar key for me.

Why is that? Did you use the proper ignition switch (automotive types are not compatible) and reconnect the original wires to the proper terminals of the new switch? Do you have a wiring diagram for your motor?

Re: Lost my key, need help!

proper switch is used, it is a marine switch with the push to choke function. But now its not a factory wired, and soldered conection, etc.. Wish i could have just ordered the darn key. Now my recifier is fried, motor runs rough, and will only start at WOT. Not sure if it is the rectifier causing this or not? lots of head aches to start the season.

Is the push to choke function working properly?

You should hear a clunk when you push it in.

Twice I've bought boats without keys. I've gone to my Merc dealer and they've handed me a ring of keys to find the right one.

choke works fine. good solid clunk when engaging. rectifier smoked last time i ran the engine, i was told to remove the 2 yellow wires and run the motor without them on the rectifier, is this correct? or will i damage something?

Do you have any pictures of your engine? I picked up a project 1986 60 hp and most of the wiring was gone, come to find out the trigger assembly and linkage was missing? Any picture will help of your electric side of your motor. Thanks.

I have had this same experience too. Too bad the marina in your area stinks. Unfortunately many do. I really don't like any of them, boating stuff is just so ridiculously overpriced. But I have at least found a few that are SOMEWHAT helpful. Really hate putting my boat in for service, though, that's why I'm trying to learn more about them and do it myself. Will be dropping my lower unit for the first time ever soon, wish me luck!

Hope your rectifier problem has been resolved.

Re: Lost my key, need help!

so, new rectifier installed, fired the motor, still running like crap. Only starts at WOT and barely runs, so i took the cover plate off the carbs and noticed a lot of fuel running down the plate between the upper and lower carb. While running there appears to be lots of fuel gushing out of upper carb but none, or not much at the lower carb, so i am trying a carb clean now, maybe got some dirty fuel after the winter, lets hope thats all it is

Sounds like the float may be stuck in the down position

Re: Lost my key, need help!

Thanks everyone who posted helpful ideas. I am going to put the carbs back together this afternoon, gotta run to town and buy fuel line first, and re-post what happens after this. Wish me luck, lol. If anyone has a good way to clean out all the small areas without an air compressor it would be helpful. The carbs have been soaking in cleaner over-night. Thanks.

Re: Lost my key, need help!

ok, so i just put the carbs back together, and besides the fact i broke the electric choke during the removal, i managed to use to manual choke knob, motor fired right up, and i ran it for about 10min to make sure there are no more issues. What are the odds of losing a key, installing a new key socket, burning out a rectifier, installing a new one, then having dirty carbs and breaking the choke all at the same time!! not good luck! anyway motor runs great now, just need to start shopping for an electric choke. Thanks everyone!

Hi I just replaced missing keys for a mercontrol by getting the number from the key swithc and going to local mercury dealer and the number apparently was a good number and volia two new keys were ordered?
Wonder why a quicksilver key can't be ordered the same way?
