1988 Searay Sundancer 270 with twin 4,3Liter Mercruiser engines and Alpha One Drives
Well, our 4th of July weekend was not the best.
We were leaving a cove with a shallow opening and needed to exit with the motors up due to the shallow water. We waited until we hit the deeper water and then lowered the motors (we thought) and took off. Shortly after that, our passengers decided to all move to one side of the boat rather quickly to take a group picture! At that time we heard some clanking and a louder bang and the boat dipped down into the water on the port side (same side as the group picture). With that we pulled back on the shifters/throttle quickly and tried to figure out what just happened. We did not see anything in the water to make us think we hit anything like a log or something.
We tried moving along again, but the port motor or drive was making quite the noise. We shut down that motor and tried going home on the starboard engine. We were moving along (a little slower) on the starboard engine when that made a different sound almost like a screeching and just shut down or stalled. We were not running hot and showed good oil pressure on our gauges. We waited a few minutes and started the starboard side up again, but could not go much off an idle without the motor shutting off.
The port side definitely was not going anywhere at this point and makes quite the clanking sound when running and didn't seem to go into forward gear.
We are not sure what could have happened. Perhaps the motors were not all the way down when we finally got out of the cove? Would that cause this to happen?
Our boat is a 1988 Searay Sundancer 270 with twin 4.3Liter Mercruiser engines and Alpha One drives. Perhaps it was just time for the drives to go?
Does anyone have any ideas what happened? We are pulling the boat out of the water this week to take the drives off and see what damage was caused internally, but the props and drives look to be in good shape from what we can see with the boat in the water.
