So i took the boat out last weekend. After a full day of tubing and cruising, was on my way back to the dock and heard a clunking sound. Put it in nuetral and wemt away, was very busy on the water so i tried to get it in gear to go to the shore... The clunking started again ( not from motor) and when almost there lost propultion either way. Clunking stopped motor still running...

Pulled boat out ( got a tow) and got it home. Suspected low fluid in o/d and assumed blew the gears. Fluid level ( when drained) was fine. A little wattery at first coming out. Didnt see any big metal chunks. O/d still locks with the motor off and control engaged f or r.

Havent pulled and inspected imternals on o/ d yet, wondering what you all suggest / suspect... Drive shaft issue??

Let me know if any additional info will help...

Thanks for amy help / guidance!

Cheers

Howdy,

Well, you should start with posing your make, year, model and serial number (engine/drive)

We can't bloviate without knowing what you have!!

Im sorry... Thought i had it in my sig... Oops. Its a 73 marlin with gm 4 cyl & merc 120hp stern drive... The one with loop on top gearset cover...

Speaking of that i removed the top gears cover (4 12 point 3/8) and the gears look pretty chewed up... Thinking this is at least some of my problem...

Well, if the gears dont look perfect, then you got a problem :) Find a rebuilt unit and just replace the entire drive.

Re: Lost propultion... After " clunking sound" ???

Thanks guys... I have 2 questions...

What do you think the cause of this was? Water in with the gear oil? The clunking before propultion?

& you would definately advise a whole swap vs a repair "do it myself" ?

Cheers, & thanks again...

It's hard to say. Usually, if it's the upper gears, it's low or LOSS of oil, enough to uncover the upper gears so that they run "dry"

It doesn't take very long.

The "repair" would be a COMPLETE rebuild. Which could be as much as just buying a new SEI replacement drive.

Yeah. Good luck on that.....used drives are frequently as "good" as the one you already have!

Well, bought it, checked out the top gears, they look good, u-joints and drive shaft looked good etc. Bought marine grease, new gaskets, impeller etc, fixed it all up and slapped in on. Started her up with the muffs, and it works. :)

We'll see on the water, but seems like I may have gotten lucky...

The sticker is "blank" on the side of this drive though, (Not even serial #'s)

So I'm a little worried it may not have been off a 120 hp set-up like seller said, if it's not the gearing will be incorrect right?

What would the symptoms of this be? I'll be taking it out in the next couple weeks to test drive, after a little more driveway tuning...

Thanks All,
~ JR

Yeah.

It's "correct" if the WOT RPM is within the right range for your engine with the prop you used before.....
