Always went into reverse but made little gringing noises when first engaged now wont go in reverse at all. when using throttle/shift handle forward works fine but motor shuts off when trying to put in reverse just as if key was turned off. disconected black shift cable and tried shifting manually. holding outside sheath and pushing cable in, forward works fine when holding sheath and pulling cable for reverse nothing happens except it stays in neutral no noises no grinding. i know the cable isnt broken cause it engages forward and goes back to neutral. appreciate any help/suggestions, thanks jim.

Thanks Rick that was good info. now i understand why the motor shuts off. but this switch is used to assist with disengaging not engaging. still dont understand why i cant get reverse to engage. even with shift cable disconnected and cable manually operated (engine ideling) only can get forward to engage/disengage. will keep looking appreciate the help, jim

Hi Jim,

If you haven't pulled the drive to look at the shift mechanism you might do that. You can shift it on the bench and see if it's moving easily.

Make sure you read the service manual ( in FWD to remove/replace) for the procedure...

Look in the "Adults only" at the top of the page....
You need #3...
You most likely need a new lower cable....
You will need to remove the drive for that anyway, so check to see how it shifts when you do that....
It would not hurt to lube the pivot points on the shift plate with some 30 wt oil....
:)
