Lost reverse. PLease help.

I have a 1975, Mercury 650 and lost the reverse.

I was working on in but that was for fuel suppley and carb problems. As far as I know I have not done anything to the lower unit that I think, would have effected it.

When I place it in reverse it reve's high but does not engage. It works well in forward.

I've read here on other posts that I may have to place a shaft back in place in the lower unit. I just have to figure how to get the lower off to do that.

Some times when a engine has been tilted up and is put back down without being in fwd the rev dogs sit on the tilt pin and bind the shift linkage so the won't shift properly
