Lost some speed-merc 115

I have a 1988, 115 merc, inline 6. Compression is good all arounf the 125 mark. In the past year I have lost about 8 mph. This is based on gps speed.

Motor runs great besides this except last week I was driving it slowly and noticed at one point there was quite a bit of exhaust smoke coming from engine. Docked for about an hour and it dissappeared.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

When were the cabrs cleaned last?

Have your rpms dropped? Are you sure it's an engine issue?

rpms maybe slightly about 400.....

what else could it be?

carbs about 2 years ago....

A dinged up prop can cause loss of speed. Also, inspect the spark plugs. If any are real clean, you may have water infiltration into the cylinders.

Is it kept in the water for long peroids of time, bulkd up of crud on the hull?
