It's just a switch. I Boats has them in many different styles. Look it up in the boat parts and accessories search. Or your local parts store.

Can I delete the ignition switch by adding a pushbutton switch to activate the starter? i'm thinking it will probably be both black wires to a new push button switch. What do you think?

Why not take the switch to the marine dealer and get a new key. So you use a push button to start the engine, how do you plan to stop it and activate the choke?

Good point about turning it off. I did take it to my local dealer. He would only sell me a new $38 switch

There is a code on that switch and there are only about a half dozen or so different keys. If this is Mercury or Mercruiser power go to a Merc dealer (one that cares). If Evinrude/Johnson go an Evinrude dealer. Even a locksmith may be able to cut a key for you if he knows his stuff. Then by a couple spares.
