Hi all. I have a 69 85 Johnson which may be worth spending as few dollars on maybe not?
I have obtained some information from one of the guys here on I-boats but am looking for some more help.
First from what I've read here recently about Doublebars's 1975 75HP having less compression than mine I'm doubting mine is in any better shape.
I purchased this motor to power a 16-17' fibergglass boat.
It wasn't running but I was able to get it to fire and eventually run for several minutes operating the throttle by and at the motor. It died and I haven't been able to get any more than a few odd kicks since.
I took a compression test after it ran for those few minutes and found compression to be 100lbs on #'2 2,3,4 and only 95lbs on #1. I'm hoping that without too much expense and a little TLC I can get a bit more life from this motor yet. I don' want a speed boat just a motor that will run and power this boat until I can obtain a newer (older ) motor.
I haven't touched the settings on the carb's from previous owner, who was supposed to be a marine mechanic of some sort.
I have't check point gap as yet nor from memory I'm unsure what plug gap and type is in the motor.
All my efforts were last year and I ran out of time and season to work on it further.
I have however replaced the water pump at the outset.
The pulsepack makes a ticking sound when the key is on, but I'm unsure if I have adequate spark. Have to locate one of those neat spark testers that are shown in the Seloc manual. Also I had to obtain a rebuilt starter when attempting to start mine the motor kicked and bent the shaft.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
