OK, as I said I have alot of little things to ask people with more Knowlage in outboards then I have. First off I have a 150 HP Merc 1973 vintage according to the serial#. The motor was in storage for approx 15yrs. in a heated shop, was "professionaly" prepped for longterm storage at the time it was removed. this motor has been in my family for 20+ years so I know it worked when it was put away (i mean it ran).OK, so last week I pulled it out of storage and desided to get it going again for the Glastorn I recently picked up for free. Here is where I am at so far: all wiring was rotten beyond use, I repaired complete wiring harness inside engine. Checked engine by hand, turned over nicely, hooked up fuel tank pumped up bulb, leaking carb. Cleaned all carbs, pumped up bulb, carbs still leaked a little only if I squezed bulb very hard (and I mean very hard), I looked past that at this point. Hooked up battery to mercontrol and whent to start, no key, hotwired everything accoring to wiring diagram and she fired right up. know slight water leak at #5 cylinder spark plug hole, seemed to be less as it ran on the hose at idle. So my main questions are:
Is the carb leak bad? while running looked OK however I did notice the throttle shaft bushings appeared to be seaping a bit but stuff dries out after 15 yrs. I thought I would run it and see if it improves.
Can I get a key for this without paying a fortune? or is a new ignition a better way to go?
The water leak concerns me the most, from what I have seen knowone else has decribed a similar problem? I don't want to waste my time if the engine is junk.
This thing sounded great(with no load) I am excited to get it going.
Also the engine was laying on it's side on a pallet for 15 years, when we stood it upright it leaked clean lower unit oil out (alittle bit), but after it was running in neutral I could smell gear lube and it was dripping near the prop. Do you think it was just residuale getting washed out by the water going through it?

Any help would be apprecated, I am a ASE Master auto tech but this stuff is new to me. I have done a few searches and haven't found any subjects that are dead ringers.

It sounds like your carb floats are set a bit too high. Fuel should not leak out the throttle shafts.

There are only about a dozen keys that fit all the MerControls. A dealer likely has a set of them for you to try.

Drain and refill the gearcase with marine gear oil. Use new gaskets on the plugs. Doublecheck that it is indeed gear oil leaking from prop seal. It is normal for 2 cycle oil to come out there.

The water leak is due to a bad water jacket gasket. There is no removeable cylinder head on that motor. Put some silicone around the spark plug to seal it.

Pick up a service manual and set the idle and max timing. Max timing is 21*BTDC, and not a degree more. Idle pickup timing is 4-6*BTDC. That distributor ignition is old, but worked well. No retrofit is available.

The float and needle valve in the carbs can stand about 7 PSI pressure. It's pretty easy to get over 10 PSI with a white knuckle grip on the primer. Don't worry about it.

hope it helps

Re: Lots of questions water leak!!

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate the info. I found the key in a junk drawer and my parents house! About the water leak where should I seal it with silicone? do I need to take it apart or just smear it near where the black part of the block meets the steel part the plug screws into. dose the come off? kinda looks like a head?

There is no head. the blocks are machined one peice. Its a water jacket cover. Depends upon the leak, if its minor, then just silicone around the area, if its major, you can remove the cover, and redo the whole seal on the cover.
Mind you I HAVE heard stories about getting the bolts out.
