there is a lot of smoke coming form the prop end of my Johnson 140hp outboard. 1984 model.

I'm just wondering, is this normal? Should there be a lot of smoke coming out of the engine... IMO there shouldn't, but I'm not a mechanic and was just wondering. If it's strange I will have to leave it in to get looked at...

Maybe I'm making too big a deal of it.

It is a two cycle motor burning oil and gas and the exhaust exits the prop. There will be a bit of smoke yes and less noticeable on the water.

it is a 2 cycle motor, it is normal, that is where the exhaust comes out. you probably need to do a decarb. and make sure you are running on all cylinders.

thanks guys, makes sense, exhaust needs to come out somewhere I guess... just like on a car or bike. Was worried for bit, only noticed after replacing a fuel line and testing then engine with hose connected. feel much more at ease now.

Time to worry is if there is no smoke at all. Decarb is a good idea though.

Higher quality oils such as BRP XD-50 TC-W3 have higher flash points and built-in carbon treatment and will help. Properly fuctioning thermostats will also help a lot.

Ezeke has a good comment. If the engine is running cold (thermostats stuck open) it will not have optimal combustion and will smoke more. Make sure it is coming up to normal operating temps. Are you still running a combination fuel/oil pump or do you premix your oil?

fuel/oil pump still being used, not premixing.

I have a friend that is a mechanic coming around. He will have a look and tell me what is needed.

He reckons coz I found some oil on all sparks and also a little fluid in 1 cyl, there might be a ring/seal or something that needs replacing.

He also thinks a decarb is a good idea.

Old engine, 1984, getting on but runs good once warm.
