alright, im getting ready to trash this motor.....

my 66 johnson seahorse (20)hp model NO.FD-20c is actually idling, pretty decent infact. However it is just pooring out white smoke, like what would happen if its running lean. I AM 106% sure it is not the fuel mixture, which is 50:1.

i have followed the procedure of tuning the carb from the sticky and im able to get it at good idle, but nothing i do seems to make the smoke stop. It also doesn't really smell like anything is burning. What could be wrong with it now?

...oh yea, the longest it has idled for is maybe a minute tops a fore i killed it, and it still is fairly cool to the touch, it appears to be pumping water great as i just replaced the whole system..

Run it for awhile. It may just have some crud built up in it that is finally burning off.

Re: lots of smoke

Are you running it in a barrel? Most two stroke motors smoke like hell in a barrel, especially if you just got it running. I was suprised at how much my first motor smoked when I got it home and fired it up. When I took it out on the water it wasn't nearly the amount of smoke as in the garage.

Re: lots of smoke

I have the same problem with my 1965 33 HP Evinrude Ski-Twin. I have had the motor a year now (much to my dismay I still haven't had it on the water due to lower unit problems, carb rebuilds etc....I guess thats what happens when something sits for years) Anyway, I figure it is build up like someone said earlier. I am actually going to be able to take it out this weekend:D and I hope that after running it for a while it will 'clean' itself out....We will see how it goes....

Could be steam. Check your compression.

Re: lots of smoke

Hey, I was working on my FD-20c today also. And it smokes a lot also. BUT, I'm running it on 30:1 as that's all I have available right now. I got more gas tonight and will test it again tomorrow when I have improved the mix ratio.

Re: lots of smoke

well i dont think this is due to "gunk" buildup, we had it running last summer and it didnt smoke at all.

Yes, its currently in a barrel, but there is sooo much smoke, i do not beleive its because of being in a barrel..

i will take a picture once my neighbors go to sleep, its almost comical....

Re: lots of smoke

That is funny... Wait til the neighbours are asleep to run the engine! Ha!

I'd still try it on the water. I agree they smoke more in a barrel. Ad if you're gonna dump the engine, dump it my way! :)

Re: lots of smoke

yea, when i was 7 they called the police on me for riding a go-kart in my backyard mid day. just last week they called the cops on me cuz my jeep was too loud.....just to name a few things so i make it a personal goal to anger t hem whenever i get the chance.

but i need to figure out why the darn thing is smoking the way it is. could it be the carb is out of adjust.? i also know i sat the engine upside down, could oil have dripped down into the exhaust area? i also know that where you plug the fuel line into the engine that valve leaks a tiny bit, could this be why it smokes? im stumped and dont have much time to figure it out

Re: lots of smoke

You've been there awhile! And so have the neighbours!

There's not much that makes a 2 stroke outboard smoke other than too much oil in the mix or seafoam in it, etc. I'd take it out on the water for a good high speed run and then see if it still does it. I cant imagine it will.

Re: lots of smoke

alright, so you guys are saying that this is normal? this isnt exaust building up in the drum either, it starts as soon as the engine does. and the smoke is white...

Re: lots of smoke

Oh man, that is completely fine. You will not even notice smoke when you are on the water. Mine literally filled my whole garage with smoke and after a few good runs it was barely even there when I was out. You'll be fine. All good.

Re: lots of smoke

Is it getting hot, or rather is it peeing a good stream of water. If it was me I'd follow JB's advice and check compression to be safe.
