Hello.

I bought a nice old evinrude from a guy last year and really enjoyed it last season. Now that Spring is coming I am getting the bug to get her back on the water and was wondering if there is any way to quiet down these engines. Mine is so loud that if you are sitting in the back of my 17 1/2 foot boat you cannot hear anything 4 feet in front of you unless you yell. And I have to put the radio full blast to hear it when running top speed.

Dont get me wrong, it sounds mean and sometimes its nice, but when i want to take a relaxing cruise its just a little much.

The guy I bought it from said he had some Exhaust tune or something done to it. I didnt really know what he ment about this, but maybe thats why its so loud.

if someone can give me an idea as to how to get this thing a little quieter (if possible) that would be great. thanks!

Alright, thanks. Do you have any idea what the seller ment by Exhaust Tune? He mentioned he didnt really understand it all either, but it made it faster.

Pictures are good. Make sure you are running the airbox on the engine, too.It will quiet the engine and insure you are running the right fuel mixture.

Generally "exhaust tune" includes cutting more holes in the midsection to relieve backpressure. This generally results in more noise.
