Loud Clunk / Thud while under power

Hi, has anyone experienced what feels and sounds like your outboard hitting a log? I have a 1985 evinrude 110. Periodically I get this quick clunk in the lower unit. The other day I was at 75% throttle and I timed this thunk every 17 to 20 seconds. At slower speeds seems like it happens every few minutes. Any ideas?

Welcome to iboats.

Unfortunately I have bad news for you, classic symptoms of a worn clutch dog. They are kind of expensive for what they are.

Could you list your model#, I can't match the year and horsepower.
You might want to start by checking your lower unit oil for metal shavings.
Maybe the shift dog is jumping on the gear.

When I changed the lower unit oil, the drain plug had a sliver of metal attached (as if the plug were magnetized) could this be from the clutch dog? Any ideas on the cost to work on a lower unit?

i was hoping someone would suggest a spun hub, but since there is no change in rpm's is that unlikely?

You might try removing the bearing housing in the lower unit and see what kind of damage is there. I don't think you will like the cost of repairs if there is a lot of damage.

The bottom LU fill screw IS magnetized to catch those shivers b/4 they damage something else. I think (Hope!) a few shivers of metal is normal wear & tear.

It was the clutchdog. Took the mechanic three hours to dissasemble lower unit inspect gears, replace clutch dog, and while we were there replace the water pump.
Thanks again!
