LOUD motor...What can I do?

I don't want to complain because my motor has been working great the past couple of weeks thanks in part to help I received on this board, but my wife informed me this weekend that our motor is really loud. It's an '85 30HP Johnson long shaft. When in idle you have to yell at the person next to you to talk, when driving you can hardly hear yourself think. My wife claims she can hear me coming halfway across the lake, and it's a big lake.

Is there anyway I can make the motor quiter?

Thanks.

No, the sound proofing under the hood is non existant. The noise mostly seems to be a loud exhaust. Would it help if I lowered the motor? My motor is a long shaft with those big add-on fins. Currently those fins sit about an inch below the water. The motor is peeing properly, so it's not up too high. I don't want to set it too low cause I'm pushing a pontoon boat.

You have to yell to talk even at idle?? Come on now, any exhaust leak that serious has to be obvious. Follow the noise and see where it is coming from, then fix it.

When I run my 150 hp without the hood, it makes a HUGE difference. No matter what else you do, you need to glue in fireproof sound-deadening material to the inside of the hood. It will make a difference.

Sorry to hijack this, but mines the same! You're not the only one who finds them loud. I have a 79 Evinrude 35hp. It seems to come from the rear exhaust holes above the water line.

It should not be making loud noise out those holes. If it is, the inner exhaust tube is probably burned or corroded through / loose / broken or whatever.

Re: LOUD motor...What can I do?

In regards to noise, it can become annoying on these size engines. Much engine noise comes from resonance of the metal parts. I have thought about cleaning the iside of the hood on our 25, and having it sprayed with Rhino-Guard, or whatever the stuff is they spray on for a bed liner in pick-up trucks. I have also thought about making a better silencer for the carb intake, maybe getting rid of some of the reed valve snap. Has anyone tried any of these steps. The rewind starter also seems to have alot of resonance.

It came from the factory with a sound blanket. Somebody remove it?

FR: That foam rubber sound blanket just does'nt seem to do much. I was just wondering if there might be something better. The sound is just at the pitch to make it annoying.

Re: LOUD motor...What can I do?

The motor appears to have lost all it's original insulation. I bought an antifatigue mat in the surplus section of Princess Auto last night. It will definitely deaden the sound. Just have to test it tonight to see how it deals with heat and gas before I glue it to the cowling. I don't want it to ruin my motor.....I don't want it that quite.

Make sure the plug wires dont short out on it and make sure it is clear of everything.

Tested it out tonight in the garage. It's not affected by gas.
It does melt under alot of heat...definitely much hotter than the motor. I held it under a flame for 30 seconds, it melts but doesn't catch fire. I think this is going to work well. I'll find out this weekend.

Re: LOUD motor...What can I do?

So I insulated the cowling this weekend and ..................nothing! It's still as loud as it was before. It is definitely a loud muffler but I'm not going to complain. I was brave this weekend and took it on it's longest trip yet with no problems (knock on wood).
