I have a 1979 150hp evinrude OCM that started making a funny noises when I put in into reverse. If I am in neutral and put it into reverse It will make a really loud clack noise, like a gear in catching or something. What could this be any ideas please? Also it makes the same noise when I put it into forward but, not nearly as loud or violent. Thanks

Re: Loud noise when shift into gear!!

When the engine is running, all of the gears are constantly in motion so that when you shift ftrom neutral, you use a quick sharp motion to move the dog into contact with whatever gear you are reaching.

This contact puts the unmoving propeller shaft in motion at as much as 600 RPM depending on what RPM your idle is set. Some 15" stainless propellers weigh 16 pounds, so it is a stretch and a strain.

Bottom line is to go into gear at as low RPM as possible. And never go directly from reverse to forward or vice versa without allowing time for the propeller to slow down.

check your lower unit oil. your shift should be fast and deliberate. a slow shift only grinds the edges off the gears.
