loud rattle coming from 85 Alpha one upper unit

I just replaced my cracked lower unit with a rebuilt unit. Today I ran the boat with the ear muffs on. At low rpm sounds good but as soon as you give it some gas a loud gear rattle from the upper unit. In addition to this when it is in reverse I can stop the prop shaft by grabbing it? Does the rattle sound like Ujoints. If so what am I risking buy running the rest of the season no more cash and I want to get out. One more question should exhaust water becoming out by the shifting mechanism where the lower and upper unit join? Any help is appreciated thanks!!!

1-weird noises never get better, just cost more money the longer you run it like that.
2-no, you shouldn't be able to stop the shaft by hand in reverse.
3-risking the upper half hand-grenading costing more to replace
4- no- water should not be coming out of drive between halves.

I would not have replaced the lower half without taking the upper off and inspecting the gimble, bellows, u-joints, and gears in the upper.
