When I start my motor up (Merc 50hp 2 stroke) it makes a loud whining sound. It appears to be coming from the starter but I'm not sure why this is happening or what exactly is wrong. Please view the linked video I made and let me know if you can solve this. If it is the starter, will it need replacing, adjusting, fixing, etc? What could've caused this? Good to know so it doesn't happen again. Thanks!

Didn't hear a whining noise, but I did hear the bendix dragging. It isn't dropping as fast as it should when the motor catches and the teeth are hitting the flywheel. Grease the bendix.

So you think it's that simple? Would be great if it is. I call it a whine but maybe some wouldn't. If you turn up volume you'll hear the noise right when starting for a split second. Do I just cover it in grease? Will trailer bearing grease be ok? It's what I have on hand.

Lubricate the armature bottom bushing.-------Inspect brushes at the same time

UPDATE

I greased the bendix and shaft and inspected brushes and everything else. Still does the same thing. Now I don't know what to do.

Any simple tests to eliminate the starter? I could probably buy a new aftermarket starter online cheaper than getting it looked at if it indeed is coming from that.

Also, something to mention... Someone mentioned a possible solenoid wire grounding/shorting out being a cause. My kill switch wire just happened to come disconnected from it's splice that same day. Any chance that's it?
