So you have an engine, a 1987 evinrude 70hp 3 cyl. It is a high hour engine but runs, and all three cylinders are showing a psi reading of 80-85psi. What is causing the low pressure readings for each cylinder? Is it a problem that needs attention or do you just think if it aint broke why fix it even though they should be 100+ each?

It's high-time and all readings are simular...they go hand-in-hand and beings they all 3 have near the same reading of pressure, I think you are fine.

well just yesterday I tested a 87 90 rude after watching the owner test it, same motor same everything, except the gauge, his gauge showed 125-130 and mine showed 110-115.
which is correct?
which is why specific numbers are not published but the difference highest to lowest is.
a leakdown test is more accurate and would be my next test if I thought there was an issue with cylinder sealing.

If you haven't so yet, a decarbing may bring the compression up some.......can't hurt..... :)
