Low growl on take off

I have 115 hp, 1997 yamaha 4 stroke.

Recently the engine noise has changed on take off. Now a low growl, like it is boggin down and then as soon as I get on plane, it stops. A mechanic in Rockport thought it was a clogged low jet and therefore put in some chemicals to clean. After two tanks of gas, the sound is still there?

The engine runs great and tops out at recommended rmp's.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose. While in Rockport, they clean out accumaulted salt from head gasket and replaced, gasket and water gasket. It needed it, but I don't think the sound is related to cleaning of head gaskets, etc.

I am into bills already of over $400 and would like to try to figure it out on my own if possible. If not, I will take to mechanic.

I am looking for good mechanic in the Cypress, Texas area. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

post the full model number off the port side bracket. I don't recall a 1997 yamaha 115 4 stroke model??

In any case, that growling sounds like a carb issue.
post the model number though...

The cowling has 4V on it and when the mechanic took off the head gaskets, I saw 4 pistons. But I am not a mechanic. He did say it was a two stroke.

If your mechanic was right and it was a clogged low jet, he should have pulled and cleaned them out. Just running chemicals through it will not get the GUNK out.

C115TLRV is the model number.

Based on your description of a throaty groan, I would think it is a carb issue and should be cleaned. jets and air screws.

If you are going to attempt yourself, clean out parts#9, 12, 14.
Before unscrewing the air adjustment screw#20, count how many turns inward it takes to lightly seat it. I would think about 1 1/2 turns in. write that number down. unscrew it out and clean out passage. screw back in to lightly seated and then unscrew the number of turns out.
