Low hose water flow to impeller when flushing

Hi guys,

I most likely know the answer to this but want to confirm.

I had just replaced the water pump with genuine BRP.

Went out on the water with the kids yesterday, before we go into lock down due to the virus. Had a great time.

Came home to flush the Johnson 98 150. I put her on the muffs and fired her up. After the 20 seconds at fast idle, I realised no water through tell tale. Didn't overheat but did get to 150degrees Fahrenheit. System check didn't sound.

I found the muffs were blocking a lot of the water flow. I fired her up again and water came through TT pretty quickly, but not strong and at least water was in the block. Turned her off and swapped to the other muffs. Straight away powerful tell tale again.

I threw the faulty muffs away. However, I'm worried even with some water, it wasn't enough water flow to save the brand new impeller.

Do impeller's fry with a some water charging the muffs?

I will put her in a tank and see how well it self primes....

My head says why take the risk, replace it. After purchasing a new stator and replacing the warped carb bowls.
We are a little strapped for cash to get another genuine impeller. So looking to see what you boaters think.

Cheers, stay safe out there.

An inspection of impeller would be free. My guess would be that it's fine but stranger things have happened. Just take a peak, it will give you something to do on day six when the real boredom hits. Kind of like myself tackling an AC issue we've had for over a year on the roller skate...

Thanks Jake,

Am I just looking for tears or wear on fins?

should I replace if any wear shown at all?

Yeah mate I’m in Australia and things are closing up big time. Never seen anything like it.

I hope you guys fair it well over in the US.

Look for heat damage from running dry. Rubber smeared on the cup...obviously tears or missing vanes would indicate replacement and back flush.

Did you lube the impeller when installing? If so you may have dodged the bullet.

Yeah mate triple guard grease all through the cup. I do it to help get the cup over the fins.

Yesterday was the first run on the water since doing the pump two weeks ago.

Hi Guys,

Pump is fine, I pulled the lower unit off and checked, still like new.

After assembling though, I noticed that warm water from the exhaust now exits between the lower and mid section, should i being pulling it down again?

Water is still flowing from the exhaust.

See pics below.

Video also.

Mine (97' 200 HP) has done that since day 1.

Why use muffs? I use the flush port exclusively.

If it didnt do that before you may have misaligned the pickup tube.

Thanks

I do use the port mostly, it was more to test pump the pump this time.

so nothing to worry about then...
