Hey Everybody Check out these pics and tell me which one is right...if any.

It's a '72 Johnson 85hp
The pics shows the depth of the low idle orifices in the low idle jet chambers.

One carb had both orifices screwed in enough that they stuck out a bit into the chamber
My first inclination if that this depth is wrong.

In the other carb the orifices are screwed in to the point where they don't enter the chamber.
This one to me seems better, but I could be wrong...I'm not basing this on anything other than how I picture the fuel/airflow in my mind.

The passageway from the float chamber to the low idle orifices are not obstructed at all by the ones not screwed in as deeply...so that is not a factor.

My crummy Clymer manual is no help (hardly ever is).

Does anybody know what the correct depth for these orifices would be?

Thank You!DSC04151 II.jpgDSC04153 II.jpg

Daviet, Boobie, Joe Reeves...I'll bet one, or all, of you guys know this one.

I've got another question but I'll put it in a new post.

Thanks!

Shouldnt make a difference as long as they are bottomed out and no leakage base.

I don't know if they are "bottomed out"...what does that mean exactly?

I also don't know what you mean by "no leakage base"

I guess I don't know much on this one.

What I don't understand is why there would be a difference in the first place?

I want to make them even, They need to be seated though right?

It doesn't matter if they're protruding into the chamber under the core plug or not. The important thing is that they are all seated tight so that fuel (not air) flows only thru the inside diameter of the jet, not around the outside of it in any fashion. I suspect that what you've come across are jets, possibly of the same ID size but made on different machines..... machines that either have the jets designed in different lengths from end to end OR a different length from the tool surface to the seating area. Bottom line is that the different lengths have no effect on the performance of the carburetor.
