Low Oil Warning

I have '87 140hp Johnson with VRO. Rebuilt last year. Ran good all last summer. Tried to run recently and after idling for a couple of minutes warning started to beep beep beep (not constant like overheat). Could this be something other than oil pump problem? Would it be OK to just disconnect VRO like explained elsewhere here to fix prob?

Re: Low Oil Warning

Is the alarm rapid short tones or one tone every 20 seconds?Rapid tones is the no oil alarm and the other is the low oil alarm. The answer to your last question is yes.The vro can either be bypassed and used as a 50:1 pumper or replaced with a conventional fuel pump.

Re: Low Oil Warning

That's the no oil alarm .Inspect the oil line to and from vro pump for leaks. Is the oil reservoir primer bulb firm?Inspect oil reservoir for proper level, check for contaminates in oil reservoir,check/clean pickup in oil reservoir.Inspect the oil reservoir tank vent.If the tank won't vent ,the oil won't flow.May just be that your vro pump is getting tired.Don't take that rapid alarm lightly or engine damage will insue. It's not a failsafe. If it were my recently rebuilt engine and I wanted to maintain the vro feature ,I would upgrade to a new four wire vro ,particularly if the one you are running is the original. In any case ,check the above items and make sure that you are getting a clear ,unobstructed ,air free, and leak free oil supply from reservoir to inlet of vro pump. The only way to assure this is by disconnecting the oil inlet to pump and priming the oil line until a clear flow of oil is present.Reconnect oil line securely. It is then recommended that you mix 50:1 TCW3 oil in you fuel until you can establish oil usage from reservoir.Do this by marking a line on the side of the resrvoir at and below the oil level.Test run for results.

Re: Low Oil Warning

I thought this problem was going to be more complicated (ie $$), so thought about eliminating oil injector and running pre mixed, but after checking things you suggested I found leak. Thanks I think I'll fix leak and keep VRO
