low rpm @ full throttle

I have a 1988 v6 Mercury Black Max with thunderbolt ignition. Engine starts great and idles normally. If I hit the warm up or grab the linkage the thing revs up like normal but when I drop the throttle it only runs @ 1000 rpm or so, and I get 5mph. I have read some of the countless listings and decided to replace the stator. WRONG!
I pretty much have checked all the electrical connections. With the help of a friend, while under way I tugged on all the wiring to see if anything was loose. No good... ok next was the gas issue. no water, replaced the water fuel seperator, no obvious leaks to draw air under load. check valve good, primer bulb remains pumped up. Vent open. It idles smooth, and doesnt shake or vibrate at all. even at full throttle. Iv'e worked my way through countless problems with all my boats before using seloc, but this one is got me spoofed. If anyone can offer a suggestion or two I'd appreciate it kindly. I don't have the expensive dc volt meter, but do have a pretty good meter that I use to fix a/c's with. ohms and ect.
Thanks Randycc58

Re: low rpm @ full throttle

Sounds like it could be a power pack problem to me. Someone I know had the same problem with an 80hp Mariner. It would rev just fine witht the warm up but not when in gear, and he had the power pack(s) replaced and all is fine now.

I suspect the same thing myself, but trying to get the courage to step out and buy the thing. I have cleaned the carbs, all 6, and did everything else. I was told that the two packs were the same. If I change the wrong one I could just swap them around. I'll give it a try. Thanks. i'll let you know how it all works out
