hello, so ive been gettin the bug for summer and been thinking a lot about my boat... i have a 1979 100hp Evinrude that i use while trolling. The problem i have is on very calm days I get a lot of 2-stroke smell in the boat that seems to annoy my fishing partners (though i must be immune). My question is, is there any type of 2-stroke oil or additive that will cut back the smell? thanks! im currently using Nautilus brand 2-stroke oil.

Not necessarily harder on the wallet. If you compare the synthetics to say WalMart brand, yes -- it costs more. But WalMart sells Pennzoil synthetic for well under half what you would pay for say Merc/Yamaha/BRP sythetics.

i like the pennszoil snythetic for less smoke. i buy it at Menards for 19.99 a gal. i have found that using off brand TW3 oil that they seem to smoke more. i'm sure since they are TW3 rated that they are lubricating just fine but maybe not as refined as well to lower smoking. sort of like the 30wt non detergent oil we used to use in the 24/1 mix years ago. those good old johnnyrudes from the 50's wouldn't still be around if it didn't lubricate but some days you fogged the lake for mosquitos while you were trolling.

If you troll a lot, you might consider getting a kicker. It will use much less fuel than the big motor and probably run a lot smoother. If you premix your gas and oil, get a two cycle kicker. if you have oil injection, get a 4 cycle kicker. That way you can share the main fuel tank between the two motors. Alos, if you troll alot, the cost of the kicker will be offset by the fuel savings. Some kickers come with stators for charging batteries, which can be useful for running FF, DF, VHF and GPS.

Re: Low Smoke 2-Stroke oil

I would recomend finding a used 4-stroke kicker. No oil at all, 2-1/2 gallon tank tucked somewhere.

The other thing that might solve that but costs as much as a used kicker is an electric trolling motor. I use one with one group 29 battery which usually runs for 4-6 hours strong. Silent, and sufficient for about half of my fishing trips. Not so good on the other half which are the dawn-till-dusk days :(

Newer 2strokes with oil injection smoke less since they inject oil for the running condition instead of the large amount we have to put in to the gas mix. I am so glad those days are over for me and hope they stay that way!

Re: Low Smoke 2-Stroke oil

thanks again, i looked into getting a kicker but for the price i find it hard to justify. and i couldnt find any used ones that would also charge the battery.

i do have a electric trolling motor. its a 24v 75lb thrust unit that works great for 2 hours, but then the batteries get too weak, and i switch to the big unit. the batteries i bought were the biggest deep cycle ones at the store. i should have used the money towards a kicker, but its my mistake.

im going to try the synthetic stuff and see what that does. if it doesnt work, ill look into the kicker again.

I use the xd 50 and it doesn't smoke much even at startup.

The synthetics are worth a try then. No real way to kill the smoke completely from an engine that needs oil in the gas.

As an aside, unless the RPMs are up a little, your charging system is putting out almost no useable charging voltage even on your 100hp. If you take your time and are not in a rush, eBay and craigslist can yeild good deals. Like I recently came up with a 4hp for about $75. No charging system of course, but with my two batteries, I don't care. Every hour on a gas engine is an hour more of electric on the long days
