Biobased -- Green Earth Technologies you could try this oil.i used it for awhile in a 90 evinrude and was pleased with its low smokeability.an added bonus is its biobased .even the base stock is syth.down side was in my area I could not find a ready stable supply.if there was I might even go back to using it in my etec.i read somewhere that they use cow fat and tallow in the process .used it for over a year or 2 and the motor seemed to like it just fine.nothing like roaring down the lake smelling like a fine t bone steak, lol.

I suppose it might depend what motor you have .I use pennzoil semi synth in my motor and have zero smoke atall.zero zip nada period.if I believed it was no good I certainly would not use it in my 2011 60 etec.each to their own opion .that's what makes the world go around and keeps oil threads alive for ever, lol.

Neither your comments nor mine are opinions. They are fact based on two completely different sets of circumstances.

I use the wamart 2 stroke, but I like the smell of 2 stroke smoke:noidea:

I have to say I too love to smell 2-cycle smoke early in the morning on a fresh day of sunshine. It ranks up there with gun powder smoke in the morning too...

Full synthetics smokes less. Either Evinrude/BRP XD 100 or Pennzoil 100% synthetic. Both are expensive and even more so at 25: 1 !!

For those who like "ode-d-2-stroke", synthetic oil smells different.

Stick with 50:1 it will still provide enough smoke to keep the Misquitoes at bay

Re: Low smoke outboard 2 stroke engine oil

A buddy who sold his boat gave me a gallon of full synthetic oil a few years ago. I ran it in my 1985 70hp Johnson at 50:1 and while I got very little smoke, the fumes would make my eyes burn on a cold foggy morning while warming up the motor.
I'm pretty sure that was Penzoil brand oil, (Yellow jug). I used it up but went back to regular TCW-3 oil from what ever source was cheaper. From what I've seen, the brand of oil has less to do with how much smoke than does the brand or model outboard. My buddy runs a newer Mercury 40hp two stroke and it almost never gives off enough smoke to notice, yet my older OMC motors all smoke pretty bad, even running the same fuel mix.

Re: Low smoke outboard 2 stroke engine oil

the only thing you will do by running at 32-1 is use more oil than needed.
BUT if you are running higher revs most of the time stick with it, you wont harm the engine and WILL be producing more power with more oil anyway !!!!!
most of the race guys use anything between 18 and 32 to 1 because they are running at around 7500 rpms !! yep 7500 is not a problem for these engines is kept very well lubricated.
if your only ever running at 5500 as your max then go upto 45 to 50 to 1 and just use it like that.
if you are running high performance props with it jacked up and off the limiter (7000 rpm) then do not under any circumstances
run at 50 to 1 or the engine will fry.
I run upto around 6,000 rpm with a later version than yours and run at 50 to 1, most of my boating is not flat out just cruising.

all the fancy oils are just gimic's, stick with a decent outboard oil and it will be fine.
but each season run a drop of power tune or seafoam or that type of stuff to keep the rings nice and free of any gum.
its only the rings that can carbon up and a bit in the exhaust chamber, all the bearings will love extra oil anyway and the smoke is
just from the combustion chamber.

so general running 50-1, high performance stay with 32-1, just always use tcw3,

just my views on the subject.

Re: Low smoke outboard 2 stroke engine oil

Bearings that run smoothly with 50:1 are not going to run smoother with more oil. More oil increases the risk of deposits in the combustion chamber which can cause pre ignition, piston ring sticking. When OMC switched to 50:1 in 1964, the warranty claims involving pre ignition dropped by, I think it was more than 70%. One of the reasons for more oil on racing engines is to help with the larger clearances.

I am a huge fan of the XD series of oil as well. Even the red, XD 30 is an awesome oil. Very little smoke, and very little smell. Plus superior protection.

I had heard great things about the Penzoil synthetic on the forums as well so tried it, but quickly went back to my XD oil.

A somewhat similar situation happened to my brother in law with his 2-stroke snowmobile. He was running Polaris full synthetic. He found that after a while he would start feeling nauseous from the fumes. He switched to Polaris non-synthetic oil and he no longer got sick. His riding friends never had the problem. I run full synthetic Amsoil HP with no fume issues. And with my OptiMax the only time I ever notice fumes or smoke is during initial start up. But this engine constantly adjusts the ratio itself, I have no idea what it is at any given time.

Re: Low smoke outboard 2 stroke engine oil

You heard from the crowd.

The only oil that you shouldn't use is XD-100, UNLESS you give that motor a very, very thorough decarb. At this point it won't be easy.

XD-100 will tend to flake the carbon off (not good), due to it's formulation. XD-50 has more decarb additives than XD-30(which is good), but won't cause flaking.

Good Luck

I alternate between Pennzoil Premium Plus and XD 50 depending on which has better prices on case lots at the time.

Honestly, can't tell the difference between the two from a performance (smoke) perspective.
