I am sort of a novice when it comes to motors. I have a 1973 50hp Rude that i bought last summer When i took it out it sounded like it ran fine but only about 17mph on a 16 foot starcraft supersport, with only me any my girl in it. does this sound right?

I assume the boat is aluminum. If so, 17mph is not too good.

yeah its a SUPERSPORT. I am thinking either Coils or Carb issues. I need to get a chance to look into it.

does not sound good atall,i can row that fast.seriously thats not good for a 50 hp boat even if its glass unless the thing is major waterlogged.try giving us make ,model ,year of motor plus current prop size and rpm,s at wot.picture of boat and motor?its always a possibility if your new to boats that maybe somebody sold you a short shaft on a long shaft transom or vise a vera.need lots of info to help as theres a dozen reasons for that kind of poor performance.

Sounds like you're only running on one cylinder. I had that happen too.

Check compression, and spark.

Give your motor a basic health check.

Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Spark plug condition

Set up is huge as well. Motor height, prop selection, loading, motor trim are just a few things to begin with.

Good Luck and post back your results.
