low temp t-stats

Am looking for lower temp t-stats for a 1991 200hp v-6 looper. The reason for this is I have a 91 power head with an early 80's lower unit. Seems to get a little hot when idling and don't want to overheat the engine. At the same time don't want to leave the t-stats out and have it going into cold start high idle. Someone know if they make a lower temp tstat for these? And if so where to get them

Never heard of them for a 2 stroke. How's the water pump ??

What makes you think it's getting hot? Have you actually measured the temperature of the heads at idle? The book calls for a temperature of about 140 to 150 F at idle, which feels quite hot. You should be able to hold the palm of your hand on the head for 3 or 4 seconds before deciding it's too hot to touch. Also, if water flow actually is insufficient at idle it sure the heck isn't going to be enough at speed. When's the last time the water pump impeller was changed?

actually my motor runs warm , up to 180 degrees at times when i am idleing along... if i rev the motor up to 2500 or 3000 rpms in gear of course.....the temps drop.....the motor runs cooler, because it gets more water pressure.....

i had thought thats a sign of a weak water pump.......isnt sealing good at low speed .....but might push enough at higher rpms.

Re: low temp t-stats

water pump and impeller are brand new just put on. Actually getting good water flow. Both at idle and at running speed. Just dont want to mess anything up and was told by mech there are vernatherms that are for 110 deg. not the 140 deg. ones that I keep finding, he did say they were for older engines and may not make them anymore. The mech. checked the temps at idle and they were in the 140 to 150 range you stated. I can actually state that since I was right there with him when he checked them in a test tank. When he brought the engine up it would drop down to cooler temps. Back at idle would go back up to the 140 to 150 range. Thanks for the response I have just been keeping an eye on everything since getting the work done. Like I said dont want to mess anything up since I had the work done. And I have always had the tstats in till now.

Yup, that's exactly how it's supposed to be. As the engine comes off idle the thermostats lift off their seat to allow greater water flow, dropping the temperature. Back at idle the thermostats re-seat and temps go back up to 140-150.
