low water pressure in 80hp merc

g'day mate's<br /><br />go my 1971 merc 800 thunderbolt back from the mechs after it swollowed a bolt from one of the reed banks into No.3 piston (messy!!! new piston and rings)and thought that I would fit a water pressure gauge .no probs there was a fitting at the back of the mottor between No.2 and No.3 spark plugs that was where I was told to plump the gauge up to this<br /><br />when I got out fishin this past week end I see that I have only got 3-4 psi at about 3500 rpm and it don't go above 6 psi. is this right ?<br /><br />forgot to ad that the mech put new water pump impella in for good measure. the old one(over two years old) showed little sign of wear<br /><br />cheers Daryl<br /><br />ps. this motor is only new to me (the part rebuild was under warranty)

A 50hp motor puts out a max of 7-8 psi.And at 3000 it's about 4-5. I reckon the 6psi is a bit low at high revs for your 80. Check your manual, but I reckon it should be over 12psi. <br />oops... Just realised the post is a YEAR old..<br />Had minor brain failure
