Hello I have a early 70s V4 125 Evinrude. This motor has one bank at 135psi for each cyl but the other bank reads 125 and 128psi is there any reason outside of rings/piston/bores that could or would cause this on the v4?. Thanks Even125

Those readings are fine. Most OB comp will vary +/- 10 lbs or so.

Yeah...what solittle said. I'm really surprised a V4 this "young" still has that kind of compression. Sounds like good maint to me.

Even125,Might be able to get them even better performing a decarb with some of OMC's engine tuner.

Yeah I was happy also, thanks for the advice, Out of curiosity what is common to a single cylinder bank that can cause a drop in both (even if mine is fine). I should say that when I did the test it was with a bit of oil added to each cylinder as the motor is on a stand and has been stored for a couple of months, I jumpered it to get the readings, is it still allright? not sure how much the oil would change the readings? thanks even125.

Oil would only change the reading temporarily .If you were to repeat the compression test ,after several cranks if there was say a bad ring clearance problem , it would show itself. Moreover ,if there was a cylinder whose compression was significantly low ,it would have not attained a 125 reading with oil.

As for the lower compression reading on one particular bank,I would guess that it may be a carbureted issue which either deposited more carbon over time to the ring grooves or even a slight lean condition that may have caused some minor scoring of the bore. Can't do much to address the latter of the two ,but you could try a decarb in an attempt to dislodge any carbon that may be present in the ring grooves or cylinders of the lower reading bank.As already noted , you don't really have a problem with the compression readings,as is.However,If this engine has sat out of use for an extended period ,a rebuilding of the carburetors would be in order. This will prevent leaning out of any cylinders and raining on your good compressions parade.Good luck.

My $0.02

Scoring on one bank may indicate past or present cooling issues, stat on one side partially stuck(?) Resulting in overheat condition on one bank.

Who really knows after 33yrs or so!
