1983 alpha 1 gen 1. i want to replace the seals and o-ring on bearing carrier on the lower unit. i have the tools required. i would like to know if this can be done with outdrive installed and prop removed. i have a seloc manual and all it really shows is a complete overhaul with drive removed and lower unit seperated. here is my plan. 1. bend tabs on tab washers 2. remove retaining nut 3.remove key in carrier 4. pull carrier. my question is will prop shaft remain in place? if it does then i can replace shaft seals and o-ring and reinstall? will i need to shim or set any kind of lash? what if anything else will come out with the carrier? help please i want to be out this weekend fishing. thanks in advance on any responses.

Re: lower drive bearing carrier seals (REPOST)

Go to this page on mercstuff. The lower left lists a tool to change the seals without removing the carrier.

http://www.mercstuff.com/page15.htm

Asked them previously, mentioned to drill small holes and use small self-tap screws to hold and pull them out.

Have not tried it myself. Suggest to write to them.
