Hey,
brand new to the boating scene and loving it!
Have a question about rubber boot on lower drive unit.
We have a '96 four winns horizon 190 with 5.0 liter and cobra SX.
seems to be some cracks on the rubber boot, no oil is leaking as far
as i can see.
Is this hard or expensive to replace?

Re: Lower drive unit

Welcome to iboats.
Let's get this up to the Mercruiser, Volvo and OMC I/O or Inboard Engine Problems forum for some answers.

Re: Lower drive unit

There's actually 2 rubber boots in the drive assembly, one is for the driveshaft, & universal (the big one), and one is for the thru the prop exhaust (the small one). If the big one is cracked, you won't lose oil, it's packed with grease, but water will get in and damage the universals, and mid-drive assembly, and water will get into the bilge also, and possibly sink the boat! If the small one is cracked, no big deal, you'll just have exhaust blowing out in the wrong spot under water.

I wouldn't put the boat in the water until this is fixed! If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you can do this yourself, But it is kinda pricey, a lot of work, & painstaking. You really need to take it all apart, & replace both bellows, & the feed water hose, and anything else there at this time. Hopefully your universals, & drive shaft are Ok, not too rusted, or it can get expensive. Your best bet is to get a shop manual, and study it good, so you know what's there, & what you are getting yourself into, there are procedures to follow for installation. Good Luck, Mike
