Lower End Oil option

Probably an easily answered question:

I have left over gear oil from a car - GL-1 90 Gear Oil.

Can I use this in my lower unit - 89 Evinrude 140 HP?

I now use West Marine lower unit oil. I know I am getting a little water in the lower unit and I want to change frequently till I can lay it up to get it fixed.

Would the GL-1 90 gear oil work?

It MIGHT work, but I would suggest using lower unit oil for marine application.

Use the correct stuff and have done with it.
Did you change the seals on the screws ??

Re: Lower End Oil option

GL-1 does not contain the extreme pressure additives that GL 4 and GL-5 do. Outboard gear oils are to GL4 or 5 specs plus corrosion inhibitors to guard against the effect of water intrusion.

Perhaps therefore not a GL 1 oil unless for very gentle use.

Re: Lower End Oil option

as kenmyfam says, change the drain/fill plug gaskets. That may be your only leak...
