I have an early 1960's Mercury 50hp. Does the lower end unit use oil or grease and if grease where can you purchase it?

Uses lube. You can purchase it at your local Marine store. Some people use Gear oil from Wal-mart, just don't mix different brands.

it uses lower unit lube, essentially gear oil, however that said i believe that gear oil foams in a lower unit and doesnt lubricate as well as a lower unit lube. you can buy Lower unit lube at walmart, marine shops.... ect..

The original oil was a SAE 80 hypoid gear oil, you can use any Marine lower unit lube. Do not use a automotive gear oil as it areates and expands. That why some people think they have water in gearcase as it will turn a thick foamy yellowish white from areation.
