Let me first start by saying I've already read about what a pain they are, but I have a old Ted Williams 4.5 HP that a relative gave me a few years ago.
This week I decided to give it a go, and I managed to disassemble the carb, clean it, and I can start it (I've started it 4 or 5 times), but I'm afraid to run it for more than a few seconds because I have no idea if it needs anything else done.
It is my only/first outboard, and I know that they typically need water to run, so I'm running it in a kitchen garbage can that barely covers the prop. I read that these are air cooled, so they don't need water, but then somewhere else that they need water for cooling exhaust.
Is there anything else I should do, does it have oil for the lower end, if so where do I put it and how do I know if it's full? Besides inspecting the prop (looks OK to my eyes) what else should I check before getting it into the water?
Aside from having to take apart the carb twice (the first time I didn't get all the old needle valve seat out before putting in the new one) , it started pretty easy (carb jets were plugged with dirt/rust/gunk).
Thanks for any help.
