Re: lower exhaust elbow location

Your riser is connected to the lower elbow with a largish hose 3-4 inches. The shutter is located where the hose connects to the lower pipe or lower exhaust elbow, furthest from the motor. Have you found a manual? It pays for itself.

yes i have the clymer mercruiser stern drive manual for 86-90 alpha and bravo 1's. it only mentions the shutters (to check if overheating occurs) and doesnt have a good diagram or step by step guide for removal or installation. do u have a better manual that you would recommend GA? should i fing the official mercruiser manual for my motor?

Start another post asking for a manual source. Some of the guys have the info at their finger tips. They will ask for the serial number of the motor and outdrive. The shutters are kind of an in between item, not really motor and not really outdrive.

Re: lower exhaust elbow location

would it be ok to test my motor with muffs and no shutters to ensure my new pump and water pocket install is working correctly?

No problem but not out on the water without the flappers.

Re: lower exhaust elbow location

Yes you can, Luke. Muffs and a bad shutter are fine. The shutter stops water from flowing up the exhaust into the motor during times of low exhaust pressure. For example, your on the water cruising at a fair clip and you chop the throttle to idle (low exhaust pressure) and the stern wave catches up to you and lifts the boat. Without the shutter, there is a possibility of the wave being forced up the exhaust into the motor. This is not good! There are ways to avoid this, but it's best to replace the shutter. IMHO.

No, you have a knee pad, fire starters or hand wipes... What you don't have is a manual for any engine or drive. The clymer is worse than a seloc (and that's pretty bad)...

Here are the genuine manuals...

ENGINE MANUAL
DRIVE MANUAL

All the info you need on the shutters is in Section 6, starting on page 4 of that section...

BTW, no shutter will NOT cause overheating....
