I recently acquired a year 2000 Mercury Optimax Digital Saltwater model #1150483D. The bottom yoke is rusty and a bit corroded but still very functional. I have sprayed rust reformer and a couple coats of black paint. I see the original carbon yoke part listed for this year and model, part #86580A1 is obsolete. However a year 2001and forward 150 optimax although different model # shows the same yoke as obsolete, but also shows as available another yoke( more expensive) in stainless that looks the same. Are these parts interchangeable? Also just wondering why would Mercury use a part that easily rusts out on a motor called Optimax "Saltwater"? You know it makes you wonder, WTF the deal is! Well, now I see that I might need to remove the powerhead to change this part? It looks as if it could be removed and replaced by just pulling out the lower unit. Is ths correct or not?

Re: Bottom Yoke 150 HP Mercury Optimax

I don,t know about the newer motors but I pulled my streeing arm and yoke off to clean out the old greese and I had to dismantle everything (Power head Upper mounts ) to get the lower mounts out of the yoke. Maybe on the newer models it may be possible to remove the lower mount brackets and get the mount bolts off or at least back far enough th remove the yoke. While your in there you might want to give thought to adding solid mounts as the rubber ones will eventually in time crack and wear affecting trim. heres a link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-Inl..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item1c226a026d&vxp=mtr

Lower mount clamps cracked

150 Mercury Optimax year 2000. The clamps on both sides of lower motor mounts are cracked. What would cause this. The mounts and the yoke are all sound and tight.
