If you're just going to drop the lower half, it will drop off regardless of the gear position, but if you shift it into gear (forward or reverse), it will make it easier to align the driveshaft splines when you go to put it back together. If you are going to pull the entire drive off, that's when you need to have it in forward - otherwise it won't come off, or go back on.

well, it went real good. R&Red the impeller w/o incodent. a 7 year old impeller looked mighty good for it's age. boat had 250 round about hours ontoit. a trailer boat run on nebraska lakes and the missouri rivers. high sand content in the river, the lake may be slightly saline too. my area is known as a salt vally. and hens feel the lakes may be brackish to a certain extent, but don't know tha for a fact. impeller was still plyable, only had stress marks on the inside of the impeller. imprller hoseing had no wear ridges. drive shaft had no deceranable wear. i was impressed compared to my model 1 drive impeller. only took 3 trys to get the drive back on too. way cool. used perfect seal on the gasket parts + dawn dish washin lub on the impeller to lub it for assembley instead of 2-4-c. which i had, but not on the job site,...........

i dont know much about the psi one puts out but i had a merc outboard that seemed to pump great thur the pee hole 3 years. blade looked good. after replacement it pumped the best it ever did. i was dumb to assume it was good by the pee hole bottom line . it pumped great and the power head went bad the next week due to over heating from before. so i never assume anything and i will replace my more often. it was a mistake i will never make again
